I think it is stupid to change names of streets. It cost the city and the residents lots of money, time, and frustration. Take Lowery for instance, if you are looking it up in the city’s records, you’ll have to look up Lowery, Joseph Lowery, Joseph E Lowery and then when you finally find the address it is listed as ASHBY!
But the article did have something wrong the residents don’t ask for the change to occur the city forces it on them. When Ashby was changed to Lowery, residents did not know about it the change until it occurred. Eight year ago we (WEND) had to fight not to have the MARTA station name changed to Abernathy-West End. It would have cost MARTA 600k to make the change that we did not want but were forcing on us. This occurred at the same time they were saying they do not have money and will need to do a fare hike. Go Figure!
However, the article was correct the fear of “whites” taking over is prompting these changes. But as I told MARTA then, if they want to keep blacks educated on their history put it in the text books, because that is the only way to keep history alive. Just like we don’t know who Mr. Ashby was, in 50 years we won’t know who Mr. Lowery is.
Also no president will change a people, not matter was color he is. Most of the people shooting and killing each other probably did not vote and it they did it was the first time ever. They revel in the fact he is black, but will they do anything to make a change in their community? I doubt it. So the killings will continue.
