Criminals Beware Residents for “Safe West End Community” – Help Us Stop Crime. This message is brought to you by the W.E.N.D Public Safety Committee that needs your support in hiring an off-duty police officer. Please join us and show that you care, too.
Why do we need an off-duty police officer in West End? Recent increase in citywide criminal activity, Extremely high crime wave in neighboring Oakland City, Lack of police visibility on the streets, Too long respond time for the police (sometimes it takes 50 minutes for the police to show up), Additional, professional support for residents’ efforts and Neighborhood Crime Watch program, and a beat officer, The need to improve the image of the neighborhood and protect resident property. We need to organize and act now. Why is an off-duty police officer an effective solution? He retains full policing power when working for us. He is able to stop and question suspicious characters, ask for ID's, and check for prior arrests and outstanding warrants. He has police radio and can listen for 911 calls. When on duty, his response time is about 3 minutes. He varies the days and hours that he patrols, targeting times when there has been the most trouble. If your home or business is burglarized, he will help to assist your case, particularly with the justice system. How do you benefit as s member (household)? Each household gets a sign to put in front of his house so the off-duty police officer knows which house is a paid member’s house, The off-duty police officer has right to enter your property (not home) for example your backyard when he sees any suspicious activity (he works for you vs. he does not have that right with people who do not pay), You are going to get his direct number and you can call him and report any suspicious activity. Patrol time can be adjusted neighborhood needs. When you are out of town, your house will be patrolled more frequently. You can address any safety concerns to him and he will assist you. He reports back to the members (you will have access to his shift reports) so we know what patterns of crime are the most popular and how to better protect our homes.
